I have found I can drag the images to Firefox and then drag them straight to irfanview, CTRL-s and enter. I have made good progress so far and all the files I have processed so far are recognized by Interview as they should be.
I used Notepad++ to edit the above post and some how it became double spaced please be patient with me I am not used to this type of thread...spoiled by BBcode.

NO NOT OK
so here I am
I am having a very similar problem. Irfanview and FreeCommander can't touch two folders of image files. Some are PNG some Jpeg. The folders properties customise tab is able to see the files and I can choose an image for the folders thumbnail.

At first I though these files where alternate Data streams but Sysinternals Streams found non.
. used notepad to open one and it did. Notepad is able to deal with ADSs so Hmm...
. used Paint and it opened the image fine.
. saved the image with paint to a PNG file (it was Jpeg) irfanview will not open it.
. edited the file with paint, Saved it and it still will not open with irfanview.
. used Firefox to open the file... Its as pretty as can be? Firefox is Multiplatform...
I believe these files are forked some how.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_%28filesystem%29)
The data is there. Thumbnails are visible and paint reads them fine. I can even edit the file in paint...
I did it. I right clicked the image, opened it in Firefox just now and chose copy image from the context menu
http://yfrog.com/n5copymj
. Then pasted it into a blank irfanview screen.
. Saved the image to a new file an now it is fine.
I will try and find the difference between the saved copy that works and the original that is defying Irfanview and FreeCommander. Perhaps these Images originated on an apple Macintosh machine...

I am using a lot of brand names in this post and it is probably to long but I am not trying to sell anything so please don't ban me. I am just happy to have figured this out this far and I can save my files.

A file's data fork contains the file's data. It is simply a series of consecutive bytes of data. In a sense, the data fork of a Macintosh file corresponds to an entire file in operating systems that treat a file simply as a sequence of bytes. The bytes stored in a file's data fork do not have to exhibit any internal structure, unlike the bytes stored in the resource fork (which consists of a resource map followed by resources). Rather, your application is responsible for interpreting the bytes in the data fork in whatever manner is appropriate. The data fork of a document file might, for example, contain the text of a letter.
I am using windows XP... The files where transferred by P2P so they may have been saved without proper NTFS processing some how.I am using a lot of brand names in this post and it is probably to long but I am not trying to sell anything so please don't ban me.
